About Surbiton decca rfc

Rugby That Fits Around Life

Surbiton Decca RFC is a community rugby club based in Surbiton, Surrey. We provide social rugby, touch rugby, walking rugby and occasional fixtures for people who still love the game but want rugby to fit around modern life.

Our members include former players, veterans, parents, volunteers and people discovering rugby for the first time. Whether you’re looking for a competitive run out, a social touch session or simply a way to stay connected to the rugby community, you’ll find a welcome at Decca.

Today, we are building a club where rugby is accessible, enjoyable and sustainable for everyone.

OUR HISTORY

Our story began in 1959 as the rugby section of the Decca Company Sports Club in Tolworth. Like many large British companies of the era, Decca recognised the value of sport in bringing people together and supporting employee wellbeing. The rugby club was originally open only to company employees and quickly became an important part of the wider sports and social club.

When electronics company Racal acquired Decca in 1979, the club became known as Racal Decca RFC. As the years passed, membership expanded beyond company employees and the club developed into a thriving grassroots rugby club, welcoming players from across the local area.

For more than six decades, generations of players have worn the blue and white hoops, formed lifelong friendships, toured across the UK and Europe, and embodied the values that make rugby special: teamwork, respect, discipline and camaraderie. Tours to France, Spain, Germany, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands became a defining part of club life.

A NEW CHAPTER

In 2024, club members voted to begin a new chapter in our history by becoming Surbiton Decca RFC. The new name reflects our desire to strengthen our connection with the local community while maintaining the heritage and traditions that have defined the club for more than 65 years.

The rebrand was about far more than a new logo.

It was an opportunity to rethink what a grassroots rugby club could be.

Surbiton Decca RFC

We recognised that many people still love rugby but can no longer commit to the demands of a traditional season. Family commitments, work, travel and changing lifestyles mean that weekly training and every Saturday afternoon aren’t always realistic.

Rather than fight those changes, we chose to embrace them.

OUR RUGBY

Today, Surbiton Decca RFC operates as an occasional rugby club.

We organise a small number of adult XV fixtures each season, creating opportunities for players to enjoy the game without the commitment of a full league campaign. Alongside our occasional fixtures, we offer touch rugby and walking rugby sessions that are open to people of all ages and abilities.

Our philosophy is simple:

  • Play when you can.
  • Enjoy every minute.
  • Keep rugby in your life.

MORE THAN A RUGBY CLUB

What has always defined Decca isn’t the number of matches won or leagues played in.

It’s the people.

For over 65 years, the club has provided friendships, support, memorable tours, social events and a place where people can belong. Those values remain as important today as they were in 1959.

We are proud of our history, excited about our future, and committed to ensuring that rugby continues to have a place in the lives of our members and our local community for many years to come.

Long may it continue.
