Our History
The Decca Company, which famously turned down the chance to record The Beatles, was a significant player in the electronics industry by the late 1970s. In 1979, Racal, another electronics company, acquired Decca, and the club became known as Racal Decca RFC.
The rugby team first appeared in the social club’s annual minutes in 1959, initially limited to company employees. By the early 1980s, the club began accepting non-employee members, which led to a flourishing period as the club grew in strength and diversity.

Our Mission
To ensure our club’s longevity, we must continue to evolve. As decided at our AGM, we are proud to announce our new identity: Surbiton Decca RFC. Our mission is to provide social grassroots rugby to the Surbiton community and beyond, building a strong, inclusive club that reflects our vibrant community.
With over 65 years of history in the local area, we embrace this opportunity to rejuvenate our club. We aim to adapt our approach to the sport and lay new foundations for the next 65 years. As part of this evolution, we will become an “occasional” club, playing a reduced schedule of Saturday matches, with dates to be announced soon.
Our Community and Legacy
Friendships and rugby are at the heart of our survival on and off the pitch. We pride ourselves on playing for the love of the game, embracing the discipline it instills and the respect it teaches. Touring has always been a special part of our culture, spreading our ideals across the UK and beyond to countries like France, Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Holland, Portugal, and Germany.
Despite facing challenges over the years, Racal Decca RFC has always pulled through, thanks to the dedication and love of our members. Our spiritual home is now the Goals five-a-side football center, which has replaced the original clubhouse with all-weather sports facilities. Since 2001, regular-season rugby has moved to Kingston University’s Tolworth Court pitches. However, we continue to return to our original site for our end-of-season testimonial, celebrating members whose playing journeys are coming to an end.
Our Vision for the Future
Our new name, Surbiton Decca RFC, provides a clear geographical identity, making us easier to find for prospective players and members. This change highlights our location while maintaining our proud history. Our refreshed visual identity symbolizes the spirit and heritage of our club: the tree and sunrise from the Surbiton coat of arms, the lightning bolts from our Racal Decca RFC logo, and our hoops representing our shirt colors, which remain unchanged.
We look forward to increasing our presence in the local community, offering a unique introduction to the sport, and establishing ourselves as the premier rugby club in Surbiton. With a continued commitment to our values and a strong community focus, we aim to thrive for many more years to come.
Long may it continue.
