Racal Decca RFC Rebrands to Surbiton Decca RFC, Embracing a New Era

Racal Decca RFC, a rugby club with a rich history spanning over 65 years, is proud to announce its rebranding to Surbiton Decca RFC. This transformation reflects our commitment to evolving with our community and continuing our legacy of inclusivity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie.

Founded in 1959 as part of the Decca Company Sports Club, Racal Decca RFC has been a cornerstone of local sports culture. Initially exclusive to Decca employees, the club grew to welcome players from all walks of life, embodying the spirit of grassroots rugby. Our club has weathered many challenges, yet the dedication of our members has ensured our perseverance and growth.

Recognising the need to adapt, our club members voted at the recent AGM to rebrand as Surbiton Decca RFC. This change is more than a new name; it signifies our renewed mission to provide social grassroots rugby to the Surbiton community and beyond. Our goal is to build a robust, inclusive rugby club that represents the vibrant, diverse spirit of our local area.

Our new visual identity honours our heritage while looking forward. The tree and sunrise in our logo draw from the Surbiton coat of arms, symbolising growth and new beginnings. The lightning bolts from our Racal Decca RFC logo and the circular shape represent our Decca Records history, while the hoops reflect our traditional shirt colours, which we proudly retain.

Our rebranding to Surbiton Decca RFC aims to strengthen our presence in the local community, offering unique sporting opportunities and fostering connections. Despite transitioning to an “occasional” club with a reduced schedule of Saturday matches, our commitment to rugby and community engagement remains steadfast. Walking Rugby & Touch Rugby will become a staple of the 2024/25 season with sessions taking place every Saturday morning in Berrylands.

Club President Roland Goldstack says, “”Having played for the club for more than 25 years and now having the honour of serving as club president. I’m very excited about the club’s name change and see it as a reboot opportunity.

This new, more geographical name gives us a solid location to play from and makes it easier for new members to find us.

I love our team and all it stands for. We embody the core values of rugby: teamwork, respect, discipline, and sportsmanship. We pride ourselves on our sportsmanship and always look to play rugby for enjoyment.

Being a member of Decca has meant the world to me I and look forward to other new players having the same experience. This new chapter embodies everything I love about our team and the incredible journey we share.”

Chair Robert Holmes adds, “This is an exciting time for our club as we become something new. The past few weeks of preparation has given a newfound appreciation of who we are and where we started.

Our aim is to retain all the best bits of Decca; the welcoming family environment, the enjoyment of our sport and a varied social calendar, whilst attracting new members as we offer weekly non-contact versions of rugby and create greater community links.”

As we embark on this exciting new chapter, we invite the community to join us. Whether as players, supporters, or partners, your involvement is crucial to our ongoing success. Together, we will continue to honour our past, celebrate our present, and build a bright future for Surbiton Decca RFC.
